Cisco IPv6 Training: Site Renumbering
Well, since you are an IPv6 enthusiast; you may have been hearing a technical
term floating around called “Site Renumbering”. But, you’re still unsure what the
term actually means.
Site Renumbering, is the process in which a site (organization) is able to remove
its old existing network prefix and host address information and replace it with
new network prefix and host address information.
I know your next question probably is “Why would a site (organization) want to
do some like that?” Well, there are several reasons why:
• The Site (Organization) may have changed to a different Internet Service
Provider (ISP).
• The Site’s (Organization) internal topology maybe growing, so, the site’s IT
team has decided to just reorganize the entire site’s network.
• One Site (Organization) maybe merging with another Site (Organization).
Or
• The Site (Organization) was once a completely private network, but, now the
site (organization) wants certain servers to be accessible via the public domain
(IPv6 internet).
Technically, Site Renumbering is not an easy thing to do; because most of the
time the old address information lingers around in various server caches on the
network. But, implementing the IPv6 protocol can take away some of the
difficulties related to Site Renumbering; because, the IPv6 protocol can use either
the Stateful Autoconfiguration mechanism (which is DHCPv6 Server related) or
the Stateless Autoconfiguration mechanism (which is Router related) to
implement Site Renumbering.
Well, as you can begin to see Site Renumbering is a concept that is going to be
with us for a very long time; it is essential to know for proper IPv6 network
design and implementation.
To your success,
